High Yield Hope for Sunflower and Beet in Konya Plain

High Yield Hope for Sunflower and Beet in Konya Plain

While the Konya Plain, known as Turkey's granary, is an important production area after Thrace Region in sunflower production, high yields are expected in sunflower and beet planted in the plain if the rains continue in May this year.

47 % of 38,873 km2 of land in Konya is used as agricultural land. With its grain production of approximately 6 million tons in the harvest season, Konya makes a great contribution to the country's economy. In recent years, farmers producing on the plains have increased the diversity of green crop products and started to meet 20 percent of the production in Turkey. Sunflower and beet producers in Konya have started their planting shift.

“No empty area on the land”

Burak Kırkgöz, Head of Konya Branch of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers said that “After the rains of the fertile winter season, we expect high yields during the harvest period. Towards the end of April, beet, sunflower and corn planting, which we call green crops, has started and continues in the region. We hope that we will have a rich season. I hope the planting we have started will continue in a fruitful way until the harvest. There is no empty area on any land at the moment, all moving in the direction of cultivation. Our grains are in good condition in our barren lands. In some areas, there is a partial damage to the grains caused by the wind and erosion caused by the heavy wind. But the current situation is good. In the green crop, mostly beets and sunflowers have been planted. Then corn will be planted soon.”
