Ikonya Bread Wheat Stands Out with High Yield in Konya

The "ikonya", a new variety of bread wheat developed by the Konya Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and the Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute as part of efforts to promote the use of local seeds, stands out for its high yield.

In Konya, which ranks first in seed production in the country, the efforts of research institutes affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and private sector organizations are increasing the cultivation rates of local and national varieties through breeding programs.

The harvest of the "ikonya" bread wheat variety, which was developed through a joint project by the Konya Agriculture and Forestry Directorate and the Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute, has been completed.

"Ikonya" has delighted farmers with its yield and quality in the Akköy neighborhood of Altınekin.

Raşit Akköylü, a young agricultural engineer and farmer in the neighborhood, stated that the harvested variety has garnered interest, saying, "We are very satisfied with the seed. We tested it under irrigated conditions. The yield is around 650 kilograms per decare. We will continue planting it next year. I recommend it to our farmers."

Bekir Kağnıcıoğlu, the President of the Altınekin Chamber of Agriculture, expressed expectations that the cultivation of "ikonya" would become more widespread in the region.
