Konya Expands Chickpea Cultivation

Konya Metropolitan Municipality continues to support local farmers to promote rural development and increase agricultural production.

Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay stated that they are striving to add value to both Konya and the national economy by implementing pioneering and exemplary projects in agriculture in Konya, Turkey's grain warehouse.

Mayor Altay stated, "We are working hard to increase agricultural production and diversity in Konya. Since 2014, we have been providing agricultural support. Today, we have come together to distribute chickpea seeds. Our goal here is to provide financial support for our citizens living in rural areas, particularly for those who are not cultivating their land. We also aim to increase the use of plants like chickpeas, which have both high economic value and low water requirements."

Mayor Altay stated, "Our farmers are engaged in agricultural production across Konya's 42,000 square kilometers. As Konya Metropolitan Municipality, we provide support in the form of saplings, seedlings, and seeds. Our support continues in all 31 districts of Konya. Konya will continue to produce, and we will keep supporting it. May God grant us rainy and prosperous days. May our farmers' earnings be abundant. As Konya Metropolitan Municipality, we are always by the side of our farmers. May it be beneficial."

Konya Metropolitan Municipality, under the "Chickpea Cultivation Expansion Project in Dry Farming Areas," has provided 50% subsidized certified chickpea seed support in many districts, primarily in Meram, Selçuklu, and Karatay. As of 2025, a total of 108,675 kilograms of chickpea seeds have been distributed to producers, and production has been encouraged on 7,245 hectares of land.
