Konya Expands Support for Drought Resistant Farming

Konya Metropolitan Municipality continues to support farmers to promote the widespread cultivation of drought-resistant crops that provide high yields with minimal water across Konya.

Uğur İbrahim Altay, Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality, stated that agricultural support has been reshaped across all 31 districts in response to changing climate conditions.

“Shifting crop patterns is of great importance in the fight against drought. Expanding the cultivation of crops like chickpeas, which require less water and are more resilient to climate conditions, not only reduces costs for our farmers but also contributes to the conservation of water resources. In this context, we have provided chickpea seed support with a 50 percent grant to farmers who had previously applied, covering 7,725 decares of land with a total of 115,875 kilograms of seeds across our 31 districts. Through this support, we will bring an area equivalent to approximately 1,100 football fields into production through dry farming. I hope it will be fruitful,” he said.

Emphasizing that Konya holds a strategic position in terms of the country’s food security, Uğur İbrahim Altay stated:

“Our aim is to support our producers in transitioning to a production model that delivers higher yields with less water. Legume crops such as chickpeas not only improve soil fertility but also offer advantages in terms of water consumption. Every product grown here concerns not only farmers in Konya but all of Türkiye. With this awareness, we continue to stand by our producers. May God grant abundant rainfall and blessed days,” he said.

CHICKPEA SEEDS
