In Konya, a demonstration was held to introduce Sorghum × drummondii as an alternative to corn in the fight against global warming and drought. The field day event took place in the Alakova area of Meram district and drew significant interest from local farmers.
The varieties planted — Erdurmuş, Gözde-80, Uzun, Jumbostar, and Supergraze-1000 — showed strong yields despite high temperatures and dry conditions. Using drip irrigation, the crops were watered only six times for a total of 52 hours, achieving 60% water savings compared to corn.
The event was attended by Meram District Governor Dr. Bayram Yılmaz, Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Duran Seçen, research institute representatives, academics, NGO leaders, and many producers. In his speech, Director Seçen highlighted the strategic importance of Sorghum × drummondii in combating drought.
The plants, which reached heights of 2–3 meters, demonstrated high adaptability and efficiency in water use. Officials emphasized that this crop could offer farmers a strong alternative in regions where corn cultivation is becoming increasingly difficult.
The field day in Konya was seen as a promising step toward agricultural sustainability in the face of growing drought challenges.
