Konya Metropolitan Municipality continues to support the economy by converting unused lands into agricultural areas.
Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay stated that Konya is one of Turkey’s most important agricultural centers, emphasizing that they continue to lead in agriculture and contribute to the national economy.
Mayor Altay noted that they are using locally developed, resilient seeds that can withstand the effects of climate change and drought in Konya. He stated, "As Konya Metropolitan Municipality, we planted the Taner wheat variety, developed by our Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute, on our 800-decare agricultural production area in the Kulu Acıkuyu neighborhood. We are introducing our national varieties to the local community. Based on the soil analysis results from this land, we are implementing a fertilization model and seed coating process that offer new perspectives to our farmers. Additionally, by renting tools and equipment from local farmers at all stages of agricultural production, we are promoting a model of solidarity. We plan to use the products obtained under the supervision of expert agricultural engineers at every stage, from planting to harvest, in social aid programs this year as we have in previous years. May it be beneficial."
Konya Metropolitan Municipality had previously cultivated chickpeas in 2021, wheat in 2022, and safflower in 2023 on its 800-decare unused land in the Acıkuyu neighborhood of the Kulu district.
After crop rotations and harvests, the land was left fallow to rest, and this year, wheat was planted. The revenue generated is utilized for social aid programs.
