Konya Uses Sumac for Sustainable Farming

Konya Uses Sumac for Sustainable Farming

Konya Metropolitan Municipality continues to diversify sapling support for farmers. Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay stated that they are diligently carrying out agricultural support and projects in this field to contribute to rural development.

Mayor Altay emphasized that their primary priority in rural areas is to increase the standard of living for citizens in the regions where they live. He said, "To improve the standard of living for our fellow citizens in their respective regions, we provide various supports to farmers in all 31 districts. In this context, we have provided sumac sapling support with a 75% subsidy to farmers who applied across Konya. As the Metropolitan Municipality, we will continue to stand by our farmers, God willing."

Mayor Altay stated that sumac is a valuable plant that can be grown in water-scarce and sloped areas, provides significant economic income, and is considered part of medicinal and aromatic plant cultivation. He added, "As the Metropolitan Municipality, we are diversifying the support provided to our farmers for the production of high-value agricultural products. In this context, the distribution of sumac saplings is also important for our region. God willing, we will continue to support products that save water and generate high income per unit area in our province. Our support for Konya's farmers will continue to increase in all areas."

Speaking at the seedling distribution program in Taşkent, Taşkent Mayor Mehmet Acar thanked Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay for the support and said, "Our region is rural. As long as such activities continue here, our farmers will become stronger, and when they become stronger, the economic difficulties in our region will come to an end. I wish all the best to our farmers."

A HEALING PLANT THAT SAVES WATER: "SUMAC"

Sumac, a perennial plant and one of the most commonly collected plants in the world, is widely used in Turkey, where it is one of the most popular spices. Known for its medicinal properties, sumac is also favored for its unique flavor.

Thriving in rocky areas within forests, on sunlit limestone soils, and requiring little water, sumac is also used in landscaping due to the attractive appearance of its fruits.

Used for dyeing leather, silk, and wool, as well as in animal feed, sumac can maintain its vitality during dry periods. With its deep, strong taproot system, which is longer and stronger than its above-ground structure, sumac plays a crucial role in the fight against erosion.
