Wheat is a strategic product which is a basic food source
for both our country and all the countries of the world. In Konya, there is a
total of 2.6 million hectares of agricultural land and approximately 700,000
hectares of it is used for wheat cultivation. Our region meets approximately
10% of Turkey's wheat production and 20% of certified wheat seed production.
If an appropriate variety is not selected in ecosystems with
abundant rainfall and irrigated conditions, there can be a 50% reduction in
expected yields in wet agriculture and a 20-30% reduction in yield in dry
agriculture. The contribution of superior quality new plant varieties and
quality seed to the increase in wheat production in our country is significant.
While seed was initially only seen as a means of production, later the
relationship between seed, product, yield, and quality was understood and the
concepts of good variety and good seed came to the forefront.
With the understanding of the features that must be present
in good seed and the benefits that can be obtained by using these seeds, the
number of registered or production-licensed varieties in field crops has been
increasing. Most of the seed used in our country each year is obtained from
farmers' own productions, from each other, or from local seed suppliers, while
certified or controlled seed is provided by organizations such as TİGEM,
Pankobirlik, Agricultural Credit Cooperatives and increasingly by private seed
companies.
