The Konya Metropolitan Municipality continued to contribute to a sustainable environment in 2024 through eco-friendly energy production and waste management.
Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ugur Ibrahim Altay emphasized that they are striving to be pioneers and leaders in the fight against global issues such as climate change and drought with the environmentally friendly investments they have brought to Konya.
Mayor Altay, noting that the facilities they have implemented to reduce the effects of climate change and create a sustainable environment are a significant gain for Konya, said, "In 2024, 80.4 million kilowatts of electricity was produced from methane gas generated at the Konya Solid Waste Landfill Site and the Aslım, Ereğli, Cihanbeyli, and Akşehir Solid Waste Landfill Facilities, as well as from the sludge obtained from wastewater treatment by our KOSKİ General Directorate."
Mayor Altay, highlighting the significant steps taken in solid waste management in recent years, continued his speech as follows:
"In addition to the solid waste transfer stations serving in Selçuklu, Altınekin, Kulu, Cihanbeyli, and Sarayönü, we have also established new solid waste transfer stations in Çeltik and Yunak districts. Moreover, our Thermal Disposal Facility, designed with a modern and environmentally friendly approach, ensures that waste is disposed of without harming the environment. With our eco-friendly investments and sustainable energy projects, we will continue to prepare Konya for the future and contribute to a cleaner tomorrow."
Mayor Altay also mentioned that the Medical Waste Sterilization Facility is part of the Konya Solid Waste Landfill and Energy Production Facility, where medical waste sterilization is carried out. He stated, "We collect medical waste with 4 licensed vehicles and perform the sterilization process with 2 sterilizers. At our medical waste disposal facility, with a daily capacity of 10 tons, a total of 3,266 tons of medical waste was sterilized and disposed of in 2024."
In addition to these facilities, the Konya Metropolitan Municipality continues to generate electricity through wind and solar energy systems.
