In Konya, which contributes significantly to electricity production with Turkey's most advanced Solar Energy Systems, the expected record has arrived.
Konya generated more electricity through solar energy than Şanlıurfa's Atatürk Dam, which is Turkey's largest dam.
The official opening of the Karapınar Solar Energy Plant (GES), one of Europe's largest and among the world's few largest solar power plants, took place in May. Installation work began in January 2020 on the 20 million square meters of land that hosts Kalyon Karapınar GES.
After the power plant was put into full capacity operation, it single-handedly increased Turkey's installed solar energy capacity by 20%. The plant, which encompasses a total area equivalent to 2,600 soccer fields, uses panels with an 80% domestic production rate manufactured by Kalyon PV.
The plant is expected to produce 3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, accounting for 1% of Turkey's total electricity consumption.
