Dr. Esat Sami Polat, Selcuk University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Professor in Konya, announced that for the first time, keratin was made of sheep's wool. Prof. Dr. Polat stated that “We have been working within the Ministry of Agriculture for about 15 years for the evaluation of sheep wool in our country. Recently, we have discovered that sheep wool is a very valuable nanotechnological and biotechnological product that can meet the keratin needs in our country, and we are able to synthesize keratin in our own laboratories.”
Polat stated that “Keratin is an animal protein that makes up our skin, covers our body and hair. We need to take keratin externally as a result of the loss of this protein over time. We have a chance to obtain keratin from sheep's wool. 97 percent of sheep's wool consists of keratin. Another feature in sheep's wool is that it is 91 percent genetically matched to human keratin.
