Ereğli district is situated in Konya province, in the Central Anatolian Region, and is an important settlement due to its strategic location along major transportation routes throughout history.
The district's borders extend to the northwest foothills of the Bolkar Mountains, part of the Central Taurus range, which separates Central Anatolia from the Mediterranean. Ereğli is the fourth-largest district in Konya by area and one of the largest in Turkey by population. It has the highest population among the districts of Konya, following the three central districts (Meram, Karatay, Selçuklu).
The district’s predominantly flat terrain, its strategic location along major transportation routes, the water resources of the İvriz Stream, and its fertile soils suitable for irrigated agriculture are key factors that led people to settle in this area.
These natural and human advantages have also played a significant role in the economic development of Ereğli. Due to these factors, the region has retained its historical significance. Ereğli, one of the oldest settlements in Anatolia, was referred to as "Cybistra" by the famous geographer Strabo, describing it as a town located on the mountainside near the city of Tyana.
Its position as an important stop on the Istanbul-Syria transit route, its role as a key station on the State Railways, and its location on the road connecting Central Anatolia to the Mediterranean Region via the Gülek Defile have further contributed to its development throughout history.
