Konya Completes Key Phase in Hatay Mosque Restoration

Konya Metropolitan Municipality has completed a significant phase in the restoration of the Habib-i Neccar Mosque in Hatay, which was destroyed in the two earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaras on February 6, 2023.

Commenting on the matter, Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay recalled that Konya, with its municipalities, non-governmental organizations, and charitable citizens, earned nationwide recognition for its efforts in Hatay following the devastating earthquakes on February 6, 2023.

Altay stated, “The devastating disaster we experienced on February 6 not only destroyed buildings but also deeply shook our history, identity, and memories. When we saw that the Habib-i Neccar Mosque, known as the first mosque in Anatolia, was largely destroyed, we felt it was our duty to restore it. As Konya Metropolitan Municipality, we initiated the restoration efforts in collaboration with the General Directorate of Foundations and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to preserve our history, culture, and faith. Since the very first day, we have been meticulously working as if completing the pieces of a puzzle. We have now passed a significant stage in the restoration process. After tasks such as manufacturing the stones, rebuilding the walls, reconstructing the windows, and restoring the fountain’s roof, we successfully placed the newly crafted wooden dome of the mosque. We are handling every stone and every detail of the structure with great care.”
