Ancient flavors of Konya, which date back to nearly a century, are being registered as geographic indications by the applications of institutions and organizations.
A geographic indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In addition, the qualities, characteristics or reputation of the product should be essentially due to the place of origin and they provide an important financial contribution to both their producers-regions and Turkey.
REGISTRATION IN 3 CATEGORIES
Geographic indications are registered in three categories; "Protected designation of origin", "Protected geographic indication" and "Traditional speciality guaranteed". Protected designation of origin (PDO) is the name of a geographical region or specific area that is recognized by official rules to produce certain foods with special characteristics related to location.
Protected geographic indication (PGI) identifies an agricultural product, raw or processed, whose quality, reputation or other characteristics are linked to its geographical origin.
Traditional speciality guaranteed (TSG) refers to a product which is not included in PDO and PGI and for which its specific qualities are related to a composition, methods of manufacturing or processing based on a tradition at least for 30 years.
