Konya Now Has 91 Products with Geographical Indication

Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay has announced that Karamık Herb Soup and Sille Cookies, two traditional specialties that reflect Konya’s rich culinary heritage, have been granted geographical indication (GI) registration.

Mayor Altay said the municipality has been making significant efforts to preserve and promote Konya’s rich gastronomic heritage.

Recalling that Konya, home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Çatalhöyük with its 9,500-year history of urban settlement, also served as the capital of the Anatolian Seljuk State and has hosted numerous civilizations over thousands of years, Mayor Altay emphasized that the city is committed not only to preserving its historical and cultural landmarks but also to keeping its culinary traditions alive.

“Konya is one of Türkiye’s leading cities thanks to its deep-rooted gastronomic heritage. By securing geographical indication registration for products unique to our city, we are helping preserve and promote these local treasures. Most recently, following our municipality’s application, Karamık Herb Soup and Sille Cookies have been officially registered with geographical indication status. This recognition is of great importance both for safeguarding our cultural heritage and for passing these unique flavors on to future generations. With these latest additions, Konya now has 91 geographically indicated products. These new registrations once again demonstrate that Konya’s cuisine is not merely a culinary tradition but also a living history and a source of healing. We will continue our efforts to document, promote, and create economic value from our city’s local heritage.
