Mayor Altay: “Konya has become a city that everyone admires in terms of Municipalism”

Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur Ibrahim Altay spoke at the 2nd Local Governments Summit organized by Turkuvaz Media Group in a session titled "Local Governments in the Century of Turkey."

During the panel, Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur Ibrahim Altay shared his knowledge and experiences on local governance. He noted that in an era of globalization, local agendas are not only shaping the global agenda but also experiencing the impact of global issues on cities.

Altay, recalling his presidency at the United Cities and Local Governments World Organization (UCLG), stated, "We are talking about an association recognized as the official representative of local governments at the United Nations (UN), with 240,000 municipalities from 140 countries located in Barcelona. We have a very strong structure with regional associations on all seven continents and Metropolis, formed by cities with a population of over 1 million. Undertaking such a responsibility in the 100th year of our Republic is a source of great pride for both our city and our country," he evaluated.

Mayor Altay emphasized the concept of “Konya Model Municipalism” as a continuity, stating, "Konya has always been politically governed by people who almost share the same ideas since the past. I believe the fundamental reason for Konya being a model city today is the continuation of good practices in municipal administration. Therefore, what we call “Konya Model Municipalism” is actually about continuing what has come from the past and adding new things to it. It's like building a wall; each successor builds a row. One builds three, another builds one, but I believe it's right to continue by preserving and strengthening that wall. That's why there is currently a great climate of peace in Konya. Everyone is trying to do new things in terms of municipal administration and also continue the old ones. Konya has become the sixth-largest city in Turkey in terms of population and a city that everyone admires in terms of municipal administration. On this occasion, I express that all our guests can come to Konya by high-speed train or plane to visit Mevlana, see the Darü'l Mülk of the Seljuks, and visit Çatalhöyük, the first settlement in human history."
