Mayor Pekyatırmacı Joins UNCCD Conference in Riyadh

The Selçuklu Municipality participated in the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification Conference of the Parties, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Mayor Pekyatırmacı spoke at the panel titled "The Role of Central and Local Governments in Combating Desertification and Land Degradation" and at the Global Task Force Desertification High-Level Working Session, both held at the conference, which presents an important global vision.

The Conference of the Parties (COP16) holds significant importance as the main decision-making body of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), with 197 Parties (196 countries and the European Union).

COP16, marking the 30th anniversary of the UNCCD, stands out as the largest land conference to date. It is also the first event held in the Middle East and North Africa region, where the impacts of desertification, land degradation, and drought are felt firsthand.

The Selçuklu Municipality made a presentation about the Compost Production Center. Mayor Pekyatırmacı, during the presentation, provided information on the causes of climate change, statistical data, climate change-related disasters observed in Turkey, and measures that can be taken to adapt to and prevent them. He also shared details about the compost project implemented in Selçuklu and its results.

Mayor Pekyatırmacı shared his views on the use of underground water resources in agriculture, one of the main causes of desertification and drought, during the Global Task Force Desertification High-Level Working Session.
