Uğur İbrahim Altay, President of UCLG and Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality, participated in the 8th Local and Regional Governments Forum held at the United Nations headquarters.
Speaking at the forum held at the UN headquarters in New York, USA, Mayor Altay stated that although the world is going through difficult times, it is also facing new opportunities from another perspective. He emphasized that the multilateral system has been under pressure in recent years, but in such moments, the goal should be to renew and reaffirm commitment to cooperation at all levels of governance. Mayor Altay said, “With less than five years left to achieve the 2030 Agenda, we have made significant progress. However, we are not content with this and continue to work to advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals.”
Mayor Altay noted that this year’s forum made a significant contribution to a new social development agenda that places people, care services, and the delivery of public services at the heart of sustainable development. He stated, “This forum is a unique opportunity to make the efforts of local governments to build inclusive and resilient societies more visible. At the same time, it serves as a symbol of how multilateralism should be—more inclusive, more evidence-based, and more responsive to people’s needs.”
