Konya Becomes the 2026 European Cycling Capital

Konya Metropolitan Municipality has once again been recognized on the international stage for its visionary investments in sports and sustainable transportation.

Thanks to its growing cycling culture and expanding cycling infrastructure investments, Konya has been declared the “2026 European Cycling Capital” by the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES).

Konya Metropolitan Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay said that, following Konya’s selection as the “World Capital of Sports” in 2023—becoming the first city in Türkiye and the second in Europe to receive the title—they are now proud and delighted to carry the new designation of “2026 European Cycling Capital.”

Emphasizing that this significant title is the result of Konya’s long-standing, planned, and determined efforts, Mayor Altay said, “With the cycling lanes, the bicycle tram, bike-sharing systems, and awareness projects we have implemented over the years, we have become a model city in this field. The title of 2026 European Cycling Capital will further strengthen our city’s international brand value. Konya’s cycling success is now officially recognized in Europe. I extend my gratitude to my teammates who contributed to this achievement and to all residents of Konya who embrace the cycling culture. May this honor be beneficial for our city and our country.”

At a ceremony held at the European Parliament in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, the title of “2026 European Cycling Capital” awarded to Konya was presented to Konya Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Ahmet Murat Koru.

Konya aims to showcase its vision as a bicycle-friendly city to the world throughout 2026 through national and international events organized in cooperation with the European Commission, UNESCO, and ACES.
