Konya Has Türkiye’s Largest Bike Lane System

Konya is widely known as Türkiye’s leading bicycle-friendly city, often referred to as the “City of Bicycles.” As of 2024, it has developed a bike road network that stretches over 635 kilometers, making it the longest continuous bicycle path system in the country. In fact, Konya had already surpassed major world cities like New York back in 2020, when its bike lane network reached 550 kilometers, ranking it as the second-longest in the world at the time.

The city has invested significantly in cycling infrastructure. The bike paths are clearly marked with blue pavement and white bicycle icons, ensuring safety and visibility for cyclists. Some routes include bridges, protective barriers, and even multi-level bike parking facilities. Bicycle repair stations are available near public transport hubs, and “Bisbulans” mobile support vehicles offer free tire and gear repairs in various districts.

Culturally, Konya actively promotes cycling through events like the International Mevlana Bicycle Tour and student cycling trips to historic sites such as Çatalhöyük. The city is also home to Türkiye’s first modern velodrome, which opened in 2022 and hosts international competitions like the UCI Nations Cup.

With its commitment to safety, accessibility, and innovation, Konya has become a model city for sustainable and cyclist-friendly urban transport in Türkiye and beyond.
