Preparations for the
Umit, Youth and Under-21 World Karate Championships to be held in KONYA between
26-30 October have reached the final stage. Mehmet Baykan, General Manager of
Sports Services, who has made great efforts to bring the championship to our
city, made statements before the giant organization. Stating that this
organization is of great importance for the promotion of the country and Konya,
Baykan said, "Konya, which recently hosted the 5th Islamic Solidarity
Games held in our province, will once again show its experience and
achievements in this organization. One thousand 846 karate players from 105
countries will compete. In the national team that continues its camp activities
in Erzurum, 18 female and 21 male athletes will represent Turkey in the
championship." Baykan gave the following information about the history of
the games:
"The competitions, which were first held in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1999, are held in different countries every two years. Our national athletes are among the favorites in the competitions and have achieved the second and third place in the world in the previous championships. The previous World Junior and U21 Karate Championships were held in Santiago, Chile on 23-27 October 2019, and 1450 athletes from 86 countries participated in the championship. At the end of the championship, our nationals managed to become the second in the world in the general classification by obtaining 4 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals."
