Meram Bicycle Races Bring Children Together Through Sport

Meram Municipality’s traditional Bicycle Races, organized to introduce children to sports, promote bicycle use, and preserve neighborhood culture, also generated great excitement in the Gödene and Kovanağzı neighborhoods.

As children competed fiercely in the races, families shared in their excitement from the sidelines. Meram Mayor Mustafa Kavuş also closely followed the races and joined in the joy of the young athletes.

Held in three different age categories, the races saw children pedaling with all their strength in an effort to finish among the top competitors, while the cheers of their families added to the atmosphere. The event, which attracted strong interest from local residents, featured memorable scenes of children’s happiness and the excitement of competition. At the end of the races, the top finishers celebrated receiving their awards, while all participating children were warmly applauded for their determination and sportsmanship.

Meeting with children and their families during the races, Meram Mayor Mustafa Kavuş said that the races were not only a sporting event but also an important activity that contributes to children’s social development. Stating that cycling makes significant contributions not only to children’s physical development but also to their self-confidence, discipline, and social communication skills, Mayor Kavuş said, “We attach great importance to ensuring that our children can take part in sports safely and learn to compete, share, and have fun together with their friends. A bicycle is not only a means of transportation or a toy; it is also an important sporting tool that contributes to our children’s healthy development and helps them adopt an active lifestyle. As Meram Municipality, we will continue to expand activities that bring our children together with sports, keep them away from screens, and enable them to spend time with their friends within the framework of neighborhood culture.”

Drawing attention to the added significance of Konya’s title as the European Capital of Cycling and noting that this event is worthy of that title, Mayor Kavuş emphasized the importance of instilling this culture in children from an early age. “We want to encourage our children to ride bicycles in safe environments and make sport a natural part of their lives. Children who participate in sports, stay active, and learn to share will become the healthy and happy individuals of the future,” he said.

Mayor Kavuş also stated that events preserving neighborhood culture make significant contributions to Meram’s social life. Noting that the races will continue in different neighborhoods in the coming days, he invited all children and their families to be part of the excitement.
