Selcuk University Athletes Won 12 Medals at the European Championship!

Students from Selcuk University won 12 medals at the European Weightlifting Championship for Juniors and Under-23s held in Poland.


Athletes Cansu Bektaş and Gamze Altun, students at Selçuk University, competed in the women’s under-23 category at 45 kilograms in the championship held at the Raszyn Centrum Sports Hall in Warsaw, the capital.


Cansu Bektaş won a silver medal in the 75 kg and 91 kg categories and claimed a gold medal with a total lift of 166 kg, setting a new European record for the under-23 category.


Gamze Altun won a bronze medal in the 70 kg category, a gold in the 93 kg category, and a bronze with a total lift of 163 kg. With her 93 kg lift, she also set a new European record. Bektaş and Altun together secured six medals, including two golds, in the women’s under-23 category.


National athletes from Selçuk University's Faculty of Sports Sciences also won six medals, including three golds, in the junior women’s category.


Competing in the 45 kg category, Ezgi Kılıç won three gold medals with lifts of 74 kg, 85 kg, and a total of 159 kg, becoming the European champion. In the junior women’s 55 kg category, Merve Ilden took the podium with a lift of 82 kg and a total of 181 kg, securing third place in Europe. Yağmur Melek Şahin, competing in the 45 kg category, earned a bronze medal with a lift of 81 kg.


Selçuk University Rector Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Yılmaz expressed his gratitude to the national athletes who brought pride to the country with their medals. Yılmaz stated, “Our students from the Faculty of Sports Sciences achieved great success at the European Championship held in Poland. Along with winning medals, our athletes breaking European records has further increased our joy. I congratulate our students and all our national athletes.”
