The historical houses restored within the scope of the street improvement project initiated by Konya’s Akşehir District Municipality in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, İller Bank and Konya Governorship (YİKOB), are being brought into tourism.
Within the scope of the project initiated by Akşehir Municipality, the restoration of 269 houses in 11 streets in total has been completed since 2014. Restoration work continues in 67 houses in the second stage of Hacı Hamza Road and the third stage of Tabak Hamam Road. The streets of Akşehir Houses with old bay windows, where visitors to Akşehir also show great interest and the historical texture is not spoiled, gives visitors the feeling that they are going on a journey in history. The houses, where visitors and photographers take lots of photographs, have attracted the attention of tourism travel agencies and tourism companies recently.
Salih Akkaya, the Mayor of Akşehir Municipality, pointed out that “ Akşehir has a great potential of tourism and we constantly work to bring this potential to the forefront. There are many untouched historical artifacts and structures in Akşehir, whose old historical structure is not damaged. We have thousands of houses in Akşehir with architectural texture samples from the pre-Republican era. We continue to bring this beautiful historical texture to tourism by continuing the restoration works we have started in these houses at full speed. These works and projects we have done have been awarded many times by the Historical Cities Union. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of domestic and foreign tourists coming to Akşehir, but these visits have been disrupted due to the pandemic. As Akşehir Municipality, with these projects, we are striving to keep our historical architecture alive and increase the tourism potential, and we also enable our low-income citizens living in these historical houses to live in healthier houses.
