Akşehir Lake

Akşehir Lake

Akşehir Lake is situated in a depression between the Sultan and Emir mountains, within the Akşehir district of Konya. Administratively, it lies within the borders of both Konya and Afyonkarahisar provinces.

As the lake is located in a closed basin, it has no outflow to external bodies of water. However, its waters are not very salty due to the abundance of freshwater sources that mix along the lake's shores. The salinity increases, becoming more pronounced in the middle and northeastern parts of the lake.

Akşehir Lake is a closed basin, meaning it has no outflow to other bodies of water. This unique characteristic contributes to the lake's water balance. Despite this, the lake's waters are not highly saline, thanks to a significant amount of freshwater from surrounding sources that flow into the lake.

These freshwater inputs help dilute the salinity near the shores, making the water relatively fresh in those areas. However, as you move towards the middle and northeastern sections of the lake, the salinity increases, creating a more brackish environment. This variation in salinity across the lake is an interesting feature of its ecosystem.
