Mahalaç Hill Awaits Discovery

Mahalaç Hill, the highest peak of Karadağ in Karaman, fascinates visitors with its stunning sunrise view and generates significant interest with its historical background.

Mahalaç Hill, the highest point of Karadağ, stands out with an elevation of 2,288 meters.

The summit, referred to as Mahlaç Hill by the locals, is believed to have derived its name from Archangel Michael, who is associated with sacred sites on high grounds in Christian belief.

In line with this belief, it is known that most sacred sites dedicated to Michael were built on high peaks.

Today, Mahalaç Hill hosts a military radar station and also contains the ruins of a church dating back to the Byzantine period.

Excavation work has revealed that the church, built in a cross-shaped plan, is accompanied by a tomb chapel of a similar design.

Mahalaç Hill also bears historical traces from periods other than Christianity. Near the church, two hieroglyphic inscriptions dating back to the late Hittite period and the Iron Age have been found.
