With the positive reflection of the inclusion of sheep and goats in the scope of support in 2006, a continuous increase was recorded in the number of animals.
The ratio of the number of sheep and goats in the total livestock
has increased to 75.9% as of 2021. Although there was a 0.7 percent decrease in
the number of cattle last year compared to the previous year, the number of
sheep and goats reached 57 million 519 thousand 204 with an increase of 6.3
percent. The number of sheep increased by 7.2 percent in this period to 45
million 177 thousand 690, and the number of goats increased by 3 percent to 12
million 341 thousand 514. Regarding the number of ovine animals by province,
the cities with the highest number of ovine animals in Turkey are Van with 3
million 384 thousand, Konya with 3 million 59 thousand, Şanlıurfa with 2
million 428 thousand. These are followed by Ankara, Diyarbakır, Mersin, Balıkesir,
Antalya, Ağrı and Iğdır. Small cattle breeding is a serious source of income in
the cities that are in the first place.
