Selcuk University Advances in Domestic Seed Production

Selcuk University Faculty of Agriculture, which plays a key role in Turkish agriculture, continues to make significant strides in domestic seed production.

The developed sugar beet seeds have been planted in more than 20 provinces across Turkey, and the crops have been processed in factories. Significant progress has also been made in the international registration of the seeds.

Prof. Dr. Rahim Ada, a faculty member of the Department of Field Crops at Selçuk University Faculty of Agriculture, stated that the registration process is ongoing for more than 20 seed varieties, production permits have been obtained, and commercialization has been achieved.

Prof. Dr. Ada said, "The most striking plant is sugar beet. Because we are completely dependent on foreign sources for sugar beet seed production. In our country, the Germans, along with Belgians, French, Americans, Danes, and Swedes, dominate the market. We have come forward as competitors to them. Competing with companies that have been around for 150-200 years is not easy, but we are aware of the work we are doing and its importance. The sugar beet seeds we have developed are now in the farmer's fields. In 2024, they were planted in over 20 provinces across Turkey, harvested, and delivered to factories. Very positive results have been achieved. Significant progress has also been made in the international registration process."
