99-Million-Year-Old Rich Fossil Bed Found in Konya

99-Million-Year-Old Rich Fossil Bed Found in Konya

Hasan Hüseyin Kahrıman, who went for a walk on the Geyik Mountains in Konya’s Hadim district, found fossil shells in the rubble limestones.

Following the fossils’ trail, Kahrıman reached the fossil bed at an altitude of 2,700 meters. Dokuz Eylül University Geological Engineering Department faculty member Prof. Dr. Sacit Özer, in his laboratory and microscopic examinations, determined that the findings were a 98-millionyear-old fossil of a sea creature called ‘Rudist’.

Prof. Dr. Sacit Özer said, “A new fossiliferous locality was discovered on the eastern slope of Geyik Mountain, at an altitude of approximately 2,700 meters. Fossils are the remains of two-shelled creatures called ‘Rudists’, which offer interesting appearances with the channelled structure of their shells and lived 98 million years ago. It was found for the first time on Geyik Mountain, around Hadim and in the Central Taurus Mountains.”
