The mosaic artwork uncovered during the excavation works at
the 2,000-year-old ancient Roman Savatra Ancient City in the Yağlıbayat
District of Konya's Karatay district is priceless.
With the support of Konya Metropolitan Municipality and
Karatay Municipality, the excavation team continues their work in the ancient
city located on the historical Silk Road, 70 kilometers away from the city
center.
The findings unearthed during the excavations conducted
under the administration of the Konya Museum Directorate on the slopes of
Bozdağ reveal that the region has been inhabited since prehistoric times and
was also an important settlement during the Roman period.
As the city, which includes a parliamentary building, tower,
castle, mint, ancient roads, and underground tunnels, begins to gradually
reveal its historical fabric, the excavation works in the area where the Roman
theater and stage building are located have largely been completed.
Karatay Municipality Mayor Hasan Kılca shared the mosaic
artwork unearthed in the Savatra Ancient City on his social media. Archaeology
experts emphasized that this artwork is the first of its kind to be found in
the Konya region, highlighting its significant importance for the area.
For the first time in such a clear photograph, the Anatolian
leopard, Anatolian wild sheep, and ducks are visible.
Mayor Kılca said, "Hopefully, this place will become a
new tourism destination. We are witnessing very valuable findings in the
Savatra Ancient City. Just recently, for the first time, an inscription with the
word 'Turk' from pre-Islamic times was obtained. With the ongoing excavation of
the theater and the mosaics you see here, you can see that this is a truly
special area."
