The Gymnasium was discovered when a person who wanted to build a building on his private land near the ancient city of Laodicea (modern-day Ladik district) contacted the local museum directorate for a construction permit to determine whether his property was in an archaeological site.
During the excavations, which spanned an area of 373 square meters, a geometrically patterned floor mosaic as well as columns, column bases and a tomb made of spolia were unearthed. In ancient times, gymnasiums were places where various sports were performed. In the middle of the complex geometric patterned mosaic base, the phrase “Made in the name of Ergenus, son of Dökumanos” is written in Greek. The mosaic, covered with a roof and special materials, is protected in its own place.
