100 watchtowers were found in Bozdağ National Park in Konya’s Karatay district, which were built as a border post by the Roman Empire 2,000 years ago and were later used by the Byzantine Empire.
It was determined that the area where the towers are located was used as a military garrison during the Roman period, as a bishopric centre during the early Christian period, and was one of the important trade centres during the Seljuk period.
An important region since ancient times
The ruins in the region, which preserved their importance from the Ancient Age to the Islamic period, were unearthed by Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage Preservation and Restoration, Dr. İlker Işık and a team of 8 people of Selcuk University.
Işık said that “Bozdağ National Park, a natural protected area, is an important region that has been used historically and culturally since ancient times.”
