The underground city, which was discovered during the work carried out in Konya’s Sarayönü district, has spaces such as a cistern that can meet the water needs of approximately 20,000 people, workshop areas of various sizes and a large winery.
So far, 41 places have been identified in the 20,000 square meter area where the underground city spreads. Researchers say that based on the findings, the underground city can be dated to the 8th century. It is thought that the Christian local people may have built the underground city in the 8th century to protect themselves from raids that lasted 150 years.
