Konya’s Musical Heritage

Konya’s Musical Heritage

Konya is known for its two distinct music genres: Konya folk songs and Mevlevi music. Each reflects a unique aspect of the city’s cultural richness.

Konya folk songs, with the rhythm of the bağlama and the clinking of spoons, evoke the imagery of ancestors' horses arriving in Anatolia. This music quickly transports you to a past era, immersing you in the experiences of that time.

On the other hand, Mevlevi music represents an important example of Anatolian Sufism. Sufism, which came to Anatolia during the Seljuk period, was spread by the disciples of Hodja Ahmet Yesevi and took root in institutions like the Mevlevi Order. Mevlevi music is performed during the sema ritual, where the dervishes' movements symbolize the universe's motion, and the music represents its sound.

Listening to Mevlevi music offers a chance for deep reflection and allows you to join the dervishes on their spiritual path toward perfection.
