Selçuklu Municipality Converts Waste into Organic Fertilizer

Selçuklu Municipality continues to stand out with its environmental and zero-waste projects, carrying out a range of initiatives focused on sustainability, renewable energy, and recycling. Among the municipality’s notable environmental efforts are solar energy projects, the WASTEBOX recycling system, and organic fertilizer production from collected waste materials.

Throughout the year, the municipality has continued its environmental awareness activities and zero-waste practices aimed at promoting sustainable living and increasing public awareness on environmental issues.

As part of its renewable energy investments, Selçuklu Municipality installed Solar Energy System (GES) panels at the municipal service building and the Tropical Butterfly Garden. Through these systems, a total of 1,726,684 kilowatt-hours of electricity has been generated, contributing to more efficient energy use and environmental sustainability. According to municipal data, the project has also helped prevent the loss of thousands of trees through reduced carbon emissions. Installation works for additional GES panels in the Bağrıkurt neighborhood are also continuing.

The municipality also received the Best Practice Award at the 3rd Zero Waste Summit organized by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change for its “WASTEBOX” project. The recycling system currently operates at four different locations across the district, with plans to expand it further.

In addition to its recycling projects, Selçuklu Municipality contributes to the economy by converting organic waste into compost fertilizer. Waste collected from activities such as grass cutting, tree pruning, and marketplace cleaning is processed into compost through environmentally friendly methods.

Through the joint efforts of the municipality’s Parks and Gardens Directorate and Climate Change and Zero Waste Directorate, a total of 1,060 tons of compost fertilizer has been produced. Over the past year, 28,740 tons of recyclable waste have also been returned to the national economy through recycling efforts.
