The Historic Tombstones Museum project carried out by the Konya Metropolitan Municipality is a unique museum established in the Mevlana district, showcasing 260 significant tombstones from the Seljuk, Beyliks, and Ottoman periods.
Established on an area of approximately 4,000 square meters, the museum aims to preserve historical heritage and pass it on to future generations.
The museum houses 312 historical tombstones from the Seljuk, Beyliks, and Ottoman periods. These stones are exhibited in their original form following restoration work and transcription studies of their inscriptions. Offering visitors a cultural journey that reaches back centuries, the museum sheds light on the history of the region.
The origins of the artifacts in the museum trace back to the Şems Cemetery in Konya. After the Şems Cemetery was closed in the 1940s, the tombstones within it were transferred to the Sırçalı Medrese Tomb Monuments Museum.
The museum remained open until 2010, after which it was closed and the artifacts were transferred to the Konya Ethnography Museum. In 2017, in accordance with a protocol signed between the Metropolitan Municipality and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, these historical artifacts were moved to the Historic Tombstones Museum.
The project represents an important step toward preserving cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations. Through restoration and transcription work, the historical tombstones are preserved in their original form and presented to visitors. The museum embraces the mission of carrying the traces of the past into the future.
