Konya Metropolitan Municipality Makes Major Move in Renewable Energy

The project commencement program for the 70 MW Solar Power Plant (SPP), to be implemented by Konya Metropolitan Municipality under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and İLBANK, has been held.

Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay emphasized that one of the most critical issues discussed worldwide is climate change and its impact on cities, stating: “As Konya Metropolitan Municipality, we have made significant investments in renewable energy sources. We are a major consumer of electricity, particularly through our KOSKİ General Directorate. We also have substantial electricity consumption due to our tram system. To ensure both economic efficiency and environmental sustainability, we have made important investments to date.”

Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay stated that they aim to begin electricity generation in the autumn with the Solar Power Plant (SPP) project whose construction has now commenced, saying: “At present, Konya Metropolitan Municipality has a total of 35 MW in renewable energy investments. Of this, 25 MW comes from the Mavi Hydroelectric Power Plant, and 1.4 MW from our Seçme Hydroelectric Facilities. The remaining portion is currently in operation as solar energy investments. Today, we are carrying out the panel installation phase of the 70 MW SPP investment by KOSKİ and our Metropolitan Municipality. If everything proceeds as planned, we aim to complete the process here by the end of July or the beginning of August. We are planning to start generating electricity here around September.”

Following the speeches, the groundbreaking ceremony for the 70 MW Solar Power Plant (SPP) project of Konya Metropolitan Municipality and KOSKİ was held with prayers.

The program was attended by Karatay District Governor Cengiz Ayhan, Selçuklu Mayor Ahmet Pekyatırmacı, Karatay Mayor Hasan Kılca, Meram Mayor Mustafa Kavuş, Sarayönü Mayor Necati Koç, AK Party Konya Deputy Provincial Chairman Osman Arı, Provincial Director of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Fatih Ayaz, and İLBANK Konya Regional Director Sedat Yılmaz.

140 Million kWh of Electricity to Be Generated with 160,000 Panels

The project, implemented under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and İLBANK, with financing from the World Bank, will generate 140 million kWh of electricity annually with 160,000 panels, meeting the energy needs of more than 58,000 households as well as the KOSKİ General Directorate.

In addition, the project is expected to prevent approximately 100,000 tons of carbon emissions each year.
