The Konya Geopark Project will be brought to life under the leadership of Konya Metropolitan Municipality with the contributions of many institutions and organisations.
As part of the Geopark Project, which is of great importance for the future of Konya tourism, critical sites in Karapınar district were examined on-site in terms of their geological and natural heritage. In this context, inspections were carried out at Karapınar Acıgöl, Meke Maar and the Karapınar Desertification and Erosion Research Centre.
With the project, it is aimed to contribute to the city’s tourism potential in many areas, such as protecting, developing and promoting Konya’s natural and cultural assets with a holistic approach, as well as establishing and operating the social and technical infrastructure related to culture and tourism.
Geoparks are specially designated nature conservation areas with defined boundaries that protect geological heritage elements of international importance, such as fossils, sinkholes and landforms, and use these areas for sustainable development through education and tourism.
