The Konya Metropolitan Municipality sets an example for Turkey with its efforts to protect the environment and human health.
Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay recalled that, as part of their clean air initiatives, they implemented the "Improvement of Air Quality in the Historical City Center and Mevlana Region of Konya Project" in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change in 2021. Altay mentioned that, in the first stage, they carried out the conversion to natural gas in 1,108 low-income households in 4 neighborhoods, who initially received social assistance for coal.
Mayor Altay emphasized that, in the second phase of the project, they have completed the transformation of 263 low-income households receiving social support and residing in the city center. He stated, "Thus, since the project started in 2021, we have brought natural gas to 1,371 families. We have provided support to our fellow citizens and achieved a 99% reduction in pollution caused by coal in the areas where the project was implemented."
Altay expressed, "In this phase as well, we hope to complete the natural gas conversion of 300 households. Our sole aim as the Metropolitan Municipality is to leave a more livable, sustainable, and clean Konya for our children."
