Karatay Municipality continues to carry out numerous projects aimed at protecting the environment, using natural resources efficiently, and combating climate change.
Through zero waste initiatives, solar energy investments, and international environmental agreements, Karatay is advancing its vision of a sustainable city with determined steps. The goal is to leave a more livable Karatay for future generations.
As part of the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) signed by the municipality, the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP), developed to adapt to climate change and reduce carbon emissions, has become one of the key steps Karatay has taken on its path to sustainability.
With this agreement, climate plans will be developed at the local level, digital monitoring systems will be established, and technical knowledge will be shared. In this way, the initiative will contribute to Karatay’s sustainable development goals.
Through its collaboration with Lithuania’s Central Project Management Agency (CPVA), Karatay Municipality has formed international partnerships in energy transition as part of the EU4ETTR Project. This initiative will not only help Karatay achieve its climate goals but also support the broader adoption of the Covenant of Mayors in Turkey and the Western Balkans.
In line with its Zero Waste goal, Karatay Municipality has implemented significant transformations in waste management across the district. Projects such as the separate collection of paper, plastic, glass, organic, and electronic waste have raised public awareness, while Karatay officially reinforced its vision of a sustainable city on the international stage by signing the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM).
Karatay Municipality previously generated a total of 2,900 MWh of electricity annually through its solar power plants in Tatlıcak, Saraçoğlu, Kalenderhane, and Büyüksinan. Now, with the fifth solar power plant currently under construction in İsmil Neighborhood, the goal is to reach an annual production of 11,600 MWh.
