The restoration work on the Habib-i Neccar Mosque in Hatay, which was heavily damaged in the February 6, 2023 earthquake and is being carried out by the Konya Metropolitan Municipality, is progressing rapidly.
Konya Governor İbrahim Akın, AK Party Konya Deputies Latif Selvi and Mustafa Hakan Özer, Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay, Karatay Mayor Hasan Kılca, Meram Mayor Mustafa Kavuş, and Mustafa Kemal University Rector Prof. Dr. Veysel Eren visited the Habib-i Neccar Mosque, where restoration work is swiftly ongoing, to inspect the site and receive updates on the latest progress.
Following the inspection, Mayor Altay stated that Konya Metropolitan Municipality has carried out significant work in Hatay after the February 6 earthquake. He also recalled that he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Hatay Mustafa Kemal University in recognition of these efforts.
Mayor Altay remarked, “During the earthquake, our local governments wrote a remarkable success story and worked tirelessly to meet the needs of our citizens. Following the instructions given, we arrived in Hatay on the evening of February 6. I stayed in Hatay for approximately 40 days. If today the success of Konya Municipality during the earthquake is being highlighted, it is because of Konya’s collective effort and solidarity.”
Altay stated, “The earthquake not only altered our cities but also placed immense pressure on our cultural heritage. Hundreds of registered heritage sites were destroyed. As the Konya Metropolitan Municipality, we are taking on the responsibility of restoring the Habib-i Neccar Mosque with utmost dedication. We are conducting this meticulous work with great effort. In coordination with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, under the supervision of the General Directorate of Foundations, and guided by recommendations from the scientific committee, we are carefully carrying out the restoration. Once completed, visitors will once again see the Habib-i Neccar as they remember it, while also benefiting from a building designed to withstand future earthquakes. This will transform the Konya-Hatay solidarity into an everlasting bond of friendship.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to all the people of Hatay who have warmly embraced us. I also express my gratitude to the 2.3 million residents of Konya, as well as those living abroad, and to all institutions and organizations who contributed to the efforts that led to my receiving the honorary doctorate title. I hope our building opens as soon as possible and thank all the workers who have played a role in this endeavor.”
