With Konya Metropolitan Municipality's "Safe School Routes Project," students in the bicycle city of Konya are safely commuting to their schools.
Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay stated that they are continuing to expand the "Safe School Routes Project," implemented as part of the Bicycle Master Plan, the first of its kind in Turkey, prepared in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and Konya Metropolitan Municipality.
Mayor Altay noted that with 635 kilometers of bike paths, Konya has the longest cycling routes in Turkey, and they are setting an example in this area. He emphasized that the "Safe School Routes Project" is one of their leading initiatives. “So far, the project has been implemented in 17 middle schools and 5 Bilgehanes, and with the addition of 2 new middle schools, the number has increased to 19. Most recently, Mehmet Beğen Middle School and Zafer Middle School have joined our project. Our motorized officers accompany students, who receive theoretical training, wearing reflective vests and helmets, along designated routes. In this way, our children can safely ride their bicycles to school, protected from traffic and potential dangers,” he said.
In the project carried out in collaboration with the Konya Provincial Directorate of National Education, students at Mehmet Beğen Middle School and Zafer Middle School participated in group bicycle riding sessions. Following a theoretical training session on the benefits of cycling, cycling equipment, and safe bicycle usage, students engaged in practical safe cycling exercises under the guidance of motorized enforcement teams.
