Konya, which has the longest network of bicycle paths in Turkey, is also among the notable cities in the world in this regard.
On June 3rd, World Bicycle Day, Konya stands out as one of
the pioneering cities in promoting cycling transportation. Konya Metropolitan
Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay stated that they have made the widespread
implementation of cycling transportation throughout the city one of their most
important goals.
Mayor Altay of Konya explained that they have provided all
kinds of facilities needed by bicycle riders in the city. He stated, "We
have placed bicycle repair stations in dozens of different locations throughout
our city. In order to meet the parking needs in the city center, we have
established bicycle parks that are aesthetically compatible with the city. Our
two-story bicycle parks, located in our covered car parks, are the first of
their kind in our country. To facilitate cycling transportation to distant
destinations, we have introduced the Bicycle Tram, which operates on the rail
system routes in our city, for the first time in Turkey. Our 50 buses are
equipped with bicycle racks. The bicycle bridges we have built on main roads
provide users with fast and safe transportation options. Additionally, through
many projects targeting children, we gift thousands of bicycles every
year."
