The Sinkhole Early Warning System is being implemented in Konya to address the increasing sinkhole risk caused by climate change and declining groundwater levels.
Led by Karatay Municipality, the project will be carried out in cooperation with the Konya Technical University Sinkhole Research Center and the Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute, and will be funded through a grant from the European Union.
The aim is to identify sinkhole risks at an early stage through a web-based system that simultaneously monitors groundwater levels, precipitation amounts, soil moisture, and surface deformations using on site monitoring stations and satellite data.
The system will also be integrated with urban planning, e-zoning, and construction permit processes, contributing to risk-based and controlled development decisions in the region.
