The World Admired the Caravanserai in Konya

The 800-year-old "Obruk Caravanserai Museum Hotel," restored by the Karatay Municipality and opened in June, was introduced to the world at the "6th Urban Economy Forum 2024" held in Canada.

The project, an important piece of cultural heritage, received high praise from politicians, academics, NGOs, and local government representatives attending the forum from around the world, particularly for its focus on preserving history and passing it on to future generations.

Karatay Municipality, which preserves Karatay’s centuries-old history, culture, and historical fabric, continues to earn great appreciation on many platforms for its efforts and dedication.

Fuat Özcan, Director of Foreign Affairs at Karatay Municipality, detailed the entire process, from the project's planning stage to the restoration and eventual transformation of the 800-year-old Seljuk caravanserai located at the 70th kilometer of the Konya-Aksaray highway into a 13-room hotel.

Fuat Özcan stated that sustainability and the preservation of cultural heritage were embraced as the two fundamental principles in bringing the Obruk Caravanserai Museum Hotel to life.

Özcan stated, "The restoration and renovation work carried out at the inn was designed with careful attention to the delicate balance between preservation and development, ensuring that the historical structure's original identity was maintained. By collecting rainwater and directing it to Obruk Lake, we contributed to the lake's natural cycle, creating a model where nature and historical sites can sustain each other. For the heating system, a solution fitting the historical structure was developed; without using radiators, we implemented underfloor heating to both preserve the building's original appearance and provide modern comfort. This approach adopted at Obruk Han demonstrates the importance of addressing preservation and development together in a harmonious way to sustain and protect cultural and historical resources. These efforts, which blend tradition with the future, open the door to a respectful and sustainable future. The Obruk Caravanserai is a legend that shines light from the depths of history to the future and brings the voice of the past into the present."
