Mevlâna expresses the night of death as “Şeb-i Arus”
(wedding night), that is, liberation from the world’s foreignness, reaching a
union. He says “Do not compare a person who does not smile when he dies to a candle!
On the path of love, only those that melt like candles emit scents like amber.”
Thus, Mevlana passed away to the divine realm, smiling with the lips of his soul, and reached the wedding night, Seb-i Arus, where he burned with longing for a lifetime. Then, while his congregation was shedding tears like waterfalls, the coffin of that vuslat passenger became a lip. He was smiling like a rose roasting in his own color.
Sultan Veled describes his father’s funeral procession in
his İbtida-nâme as follows: “The great Sultan passed away in 672 of the Hijra
(1273 AD). Eyes filled with tears. Hearts groaned in mourning. Even non-Muslim
villages were drowned in sorrow. Every pure person was loyal to him, every
nation was in love with him.”
People said: “He is the light and secret of the Prophet. It
is
the endless sea of virtues... »
“That day, no one found peace without mourning. All the people
were in great distress. He was a treasure hidden under the ground.”
Eflâki stated that “The coffin of Mevlana was renewed six times
due to the stampede of the people. And although his corpse was hoped to be
buried at the noon prayer, it was only after the afternoon prayer.”
Tabib Ekmelüddîn told people: “-Please behave politely! Do your descriptive duty in silence and with respect! This was Mevlana, the sultan of the true sheikhs and he passed away…”
As per his will, Sheikh Sadreddin-i Konevi started to sob
when he went in front of the coffin to lead the funeral prayer. It was like he
was going to pass out. They took his arms and pulled him back. Instead, Kadi
Sirajuddin led the prayer.

The rose garden of the Seljuk Palace in Konya the Anatolian
Seljuk capital, was gifted by the
Sultan of the period, Alaaddin Keykubat, to the father of
Mevlana, Sultan-ül Ulema Bahaeddin Veled. When Mevlana passed away, he was buried
in the Green Dome, which he also used as a convent and was built in this
garden.
Seb-i Arus, is known as the day when Mevlana went to the
God. In other words, Şeb-i Arus events are held on 17 December every year.
Every year on 17 December, after the afternoon prayer, the
Qur’an is read and the Ayn-ül Cem (collectively Semah ceremony) is performed.
