Konyaspor, one of the most established football clubs in Anatolia, traces its roots back to 1922. With more than a century of history, the club has become an important symbol of football culture in Konya, growing steadily through its achievements and strong local support.
The club was first founded on June 22, 1922 under the name Konya Gençlerbirliği. A major turning point came in 1965 when the team merged with Meramspor, Selçukspor and Çimentospor, officially adopting the name Konyaspor.
For many years the team competed in black and white colors. However, after a merger with their long time rival Konya İdman Yurdu at the end of the 1980–81 season, the club adopted green and white as its official colors.
For decades Konyaspor played its matches at Konya Atatürk Stadium, which opened in 1950 and had a capacity of 22,456 spectators. The stadium served as the club’s home for many memorable moments in its history. In 2014, Konyaspor moved to the modern Konya Büyükşehir Belediye Stadium, a new facility that significantly improved the matchday experience for fans and players alike.
Although the club’s founding year was once officially recorded as 1981 due to the merger period, this was corrected during the General Assembly held in September 2016, when 1922 was formally recognized again as the club’s true founding year.
Konyaspor achieved one of its most successful league campaigns in the 2015–16 season by finishing third in the Super League with 66 points. This historic result qualified the team for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League for the first time in its history.
The club’s greatest triumph came in the 2016–17 season when Konyaspor won the Turkish Cup, securing the first major trophy in its history. This victory once again earned the team a place in European competitions and marked a milestone moment for both the club and its supporters.
In the following 2017–18 season, Konyaspor finished eighth in the Super League, continuing to compete at the top level of Turkish football while maintaining its reputation as one of Anatolia’s proud clubs with a rich and enduring legacy.
