Konya Science Center, operating under the Konya Metropolitan Municipality, hosted the 7th edition of the Physics Masterclass event. During the event, academics working at CERN shared important insights about particle physics with students.
Konya Science Center, operating under the Konya Metropolitan Municipality, organized the 7th Physics Masterclass event in collaboration with Middle East Technical University (METU).
The event, held in two sessions at the Konya Science Center Conference Hall, brought together students from 15 different high schools in Konya as well as in Istanbul, Bursa, Antalya, Mersin, and Trabzon.
In the morning session of the event, high school students with an interest in scientific research were introduced to particle physics, CERN, and the Large Hadron Collider by Prof. Dr. Bilge Demirköz and Dr. Doğa Veske, faculty members of the METU Department of Physics who work at CERN. They also provided information about particle detectors.
In the afternoon session, data from the ATLAS experiment was analyzed by student pairs using computers. The 34 students participating in the event joined a live video conference with CERN to compare and discuss their research findings, just as in an international research collaboration.
The Physics Masterclass event, now in its 21st year internationally, is attended by 13,000 high school students from 60 countries. In Turkey, it has been held in person 14 times. Each year, thousands of high school students from around the world take part in this event to explore the mysteries of particle physics.
CERN Laboratory, one of the world’s largest scientific research centers, is located near Geneva, Switzerland. Here, scientists explore the mysteries of the universe using the most advanced and complex scientific instruments on the planet.
