Konya Metropolitan Municipality, in cooperation with Akşehir Municipality, has launched a new Geothermal R&D Greenhouse Project in Akşehir's Gözpınarı neighborhood. The facility, built next to a geothermal well with water at 63°C, covers 2,000 square meters and is designed to test alternative crops. Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay stated that "The municipality aims to support rural communities by increasing agricultural income and diversifying crop production.
We are experimenting with 61 different plant species to identify those that use less water and generate higher income. Our goal is to expand the variety of crops grown in greenhouses and open fields across Konya.
Akşehir Mayor Salih Akkaya emphasized the region's potential, noting that their geothermal water source is the hottest in Konya. We hope this project will pave the way for new investors and help establish Akşehir as a 'greenhouse city'.
