Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay visited the district of Altınekin, where he met with farmers during the wheat harvest and emphasized the vital role of agriculture in Türkiye’s food security.
Mayor Altay joined wheat producers in the fields and shared in the excitement of the harvest season.
Recalling that agricultural production has continued on Konya’s fertile lands for nearly 10,000 years, Altay said the city remains one of Türkiye’s most important agricultural production centers, contributing significantly to the country’s food security.
Noting that farmers work tirelessly throughout the year, Altay said this year’s abundant rainfall has created favorable conditions for agriculture.
“Thankfully, this has been a year of plentiful rainfall. We expect record yields in fruit, vegetables, grains, and many other crops. I would like to thank all of our farmers for their hard work and wish them a productive and abundant harvest season. Konya will continue to produce,” he said.
Mayor Altay stressed that Konya Metropolitan Municipality remains committed to supporting farmers, particularly those engaged in agriculture and livestock production, with the aim of increasing their incomes.
“As long as they continue producing, we will continue to stand by them. Harvesters are now working across the plains of Konya, and the harvest of corn, sugar beet, and sunflowers will follow. I thank everyone who has contributed. We hope to see many more years blessed with abundant rainfall and lasting prosperity,” he said.
Describing Konya as one of Türkiye’s leading grain-producing regions, Altay said local farmers contribute not only to the city’s economy but also to the nation’s food security.
“The pandemic showed us that agricultural production is just as important as protecting our borders. We will continue to produce on these fertile lands and support our farmers. I would like to thank all of our farmers for their dedication and hard work,” he said.
Mayor Altay also warned against stubble burning during the harvest season, noting that it causes serious damage to the soil and destroys beneficial organisms living beneath the surface.
“We ask our farmers to be sensitive on this issue. Please do not burn stubble. I believe the people of Konya will show the necessary responsibility, and I have full confidence in our farmers. Together, we can prevent this problem,” he said.
Altınekin Mayor Fatih Orhan wished farmers a productive harvest season and thanked Mayor Altay for his visit.
